Body Ecology Diet (B.E.D) is a system of health and healing designed by Donna Gates to address yeast, bacterial, and viral overgrowth in body. The purpose of this diet is to boost immunity by alkalizing blood and restoring inner ecosystem to naturally support body to be a self-healing organism.

Beginning in 2003, this way of eating has been used experimentally in the autism community. Anecdotal reports show that the first group of children with autism trying this diet all showed rapid and remarkable improvement.

Most chronic diseases, including autism, are a cascade of events that often start with a fungal infection in the gut and then the pathogenic organisms escape the intestines to invade rest of the body. The result is essentially an infected gut, and in the case of autism, an infected brain.

  • Bacterial Overgrowth (i.e., GBS+, SIBO)
  • Digestive Issues (i.e., bloating, constipation, food sensitivities)

  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Viral Overgrowth (i.e., sinusitis, hepatitis, gastroenteritis)

A wounded gut is unable to perform its job as the first line of defense for the immune system (leads to various secondary illnesses), and unable to contain incompletely digested nutrients inside gut wall (leads to allergic reactions), and unable to properly absorb nutrients to nourish body (lead to nutritional deficiency, weak inner organs, biochemical dysregulation).

The goal of B.E.D. is not to eradicate yeast, bacteria, or viruses; that is impossible and less than ideal. Instead, focus is on restoring body strength, so all parts come together and work in harmony. A true symphony!

I followed various eating regimes and am most impressed with B.E.D.; it incorporates principles that worked in the past (Blood Type Diet, Food Combining, Anti-Candida Diet) and takes things one step further. B.E.D. is a master plan for impeccable health.

First step in restoring body ecology and reversing yeast, bacterial, or viral overgrowth is starving pathogens living in body by not eating food that feeds them to grow/populate (sugar, yeast, gluten). The goal is to make the inner ecosystem/gut an unsuitable environment for them to live. B.E.D. achieves this with nutrient-dense, probiotic-rich, properly combined foods that alkalize blood, repair damaged intestinal lining, and colonize gut with friendly flora to correct body pH and assist with digestion/elimination.

See B.E.D. Principles here….

B.E.D. is free of gluten, sugar, pasteurized dairy, and yeast; these major constituents are avoided for 3 months to give the body time to begin healing process. The ingredients and methods of preparation in this diet ensure food is easy-to-digest, nutritious, and probiotic-rich.

In a few diligent weeks, most people feel a significant shift in how they feel and start to see long-time issues ease. This is often where people feel empowered to continue forward in a healthier manner.

B.E.D.’s underlying principles are traditional and tried and true for thousands of years; this is a way of eating that can be maintained (once you get going); even passed down to your grandchildren 🙂

Is yeast overgrowth an issue for you? Take candida quiz ….

Nutritional Support with Tara Carpenter, NC.

I am a Nutrition Consultant (NC.) and Personal Therapeutic Chef and offer people of all ages nutritional consultations. I did this diet with my own kids in 2011 and many of our health issues lifted. I am well-versed in unsalted probiotic foods and putting a meal on the table the whole family can enjoy, despite individual dietary and health differences.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and didn’t want medication. I followed BED and eliminated sugar and gluten and followed the recipes in the book. Eggs, quinoa, cultured veggies, green smoothies, soup, yck. Over 8 months my tsh dropped from 9 to 2 and the doctor doing my bloodwork said “whatever you’re doing keep going.”
