Green Pastures™ fermented cod liver oil (FCLO) has many benefits. Most of us know this, but don’t always know how much oil to take or to give our kids. I asked Dave Wetzel, owner of his family-owned company for his thoughts and he said “the oil can be medicinal, but it’s not a “one size fits all drug”, it’s up to each person tofind the unique dosage that they need, based on intuition and nutrient needs”.
Wetzel recommends starting with 1/8-1/2 tsp a day and going up or down from there. How much you need depends on what you yourself need at any particular time in life (even seasonally). I want to add that many people hoard their bottle because of the high expense; rationing it out over a long period of time. I will say thought that the body responds best to FCLO when taken on a regular basis, so find a dosage that works for you and be consistent for best results.
Here are some tricks to taking cod liver oil for all ages.
Fermented Cod Liver Oil
Children (3 months – 12 yrs): 1/8-1/2 tsp or 1-4 capsules (0.625 – 2.5ml)
Teens/Adults (12 yrs – adulthood): 1/2-1 tsp or 5-10 capsules (2.5m – 5ml)
Pregnant/Breastfeeding: 1-2 tsp or 10-20 capsules (5-10ml)
Elderly: 1 tsp or 10 capsules (5ml)
If you prefer FCLO in capsule form: 1 capsule = 1/8 tsp oil (500mg) ~ 1/2 tsp = 2.5ml
Fermented Cod Liver Oil & High Vitamin Butter Oil Blend
25 pounds or less: 8 drops orally a day
25-35 pounds: 1/4 tsp a day
35-45 pounds: 1/3 tsp a day
45-55 pounds: 1/2 tsp a day
55-65 pounds: 2/3 tsp a day
Teens: 1/4 – 1/2 tsp 2-3 times a day
Adults: 1/2 – 1 1/2 tsp 2-3 times a day
The Royal Blend is about 2/3 FCLO and 1/3 HVBO.
Fermented Cod Liver Oil Infusions
These mild tasting infusions use virgin coconut oil as a carrier for the fish and butter oil. You must take more to get a serving, but infusions are an easy way to include a wider variety of healthy fats in your diet. Especially for those who are sensitive to the taste of cod oil.
Children (3 months-12 yrs): 1/2 – 1 1/2 tsp
Teens/Adults (12 yrs-adulthood): 1 1/2 – 3 tsp
Pregnant/Breastfeeding: 3+ tsp
Each 1 1/2 serving contains about 65% coconut oil and 1/2 tsp infused oil (75% FCLO, 25% HVBO and/or fermented skate liver oil).
Therapeutic Dosages
Consider a higher dose if you are:
- Moving through a transitional stage (puberty, pregnancy, menopause)
- Elderly
- Experiencing cavities or teeth problems (or boone/joint!)
- Deficient in fat-soluble vitamins A & D
- A premature baby
- Lactating
- Looking to conceive
- Autistic or struggle with a behavioral issue (ADD, ADHD, OCD)
- Without much exposure to natural sunlight
- Recovering from an illness
Note: The above dosages are 2-5 x greater than U.S. RDA for kids, 4 x greater for adults, and 8 x greater for pregnant women. Keep in mind that RDA values are based on studies conducted on the general population and are recognized to be largely deficient in vitamin D (says Weston A. Price).
