I am a Group Buyer for Green Pastures™ fermented cod liver oil (FCLO) since 2011 to distribute antioxidant, vitamin, omega fat acid-rich products at a reduced rate in Vermont with pick-up points in Montpelier, Plainfield, Barre, Williston. For a product/price list, email tara@happybellies.net.
This family owned company is based in Nebraska and uses only wild Alaska cod certified by Marine Stewardship Council and made in the traditional way your grandmother or great grandma may have.
The product they carry that I most recommend is Butter Oil Blends in chocolate, cinnamon, or plain. This is the product – after trying many other things – that helped me to successfully turn around a major tooth and gum issue back in 2011. Every day I swished this concentrated mix of both butter oil and fermented cod liver oil in my mouth, morning and night. In weeks my sensitivities began to disappear. My gums stopped receding, I no longer got cavities, nor electrical zaps from eating cold or hot food.
I was so pleased (and surprised!) that I became a Group Buyer with this wonderful, family-owned company to further help get the word out about this special traditional food made here in the United States.
I am a Group Buyer to bring fermented cod liver oil and butter blends to Vermont at a reduced price. Email tara@happybellies.net for product/price list. I place orders in Spring, Autumn, Early/Mid-Winter with pick-up points Montpelier, Plainfield, Barre, Williston.
For mouth/throat/esophagus issues simply swish blend in mouth – the way you might “oil pull” with a spoon of coconut oil – then swallow. Does the idea of ingesting cod oil sicken you? Try the capsule form. Most people with dairy intolerance find they can handle the type of butter used in this blend as its more of a clarified/a.k.a. ghee. If you are not able to do that then try straight-up oil, also in capsule form for joints, inflammation, etc.
My interview with Green Pastures™ owner, Dave Wetzel ….
Fermented cod liver oil (FCLO) and butter oil blends have many benefits. Most of us know this yet don’t always know how much oil to take or give our kids. So I scheduled a time to meet with Green Pastures owner, Dave Wetzel, to pick his thoughts. His bottom line was “this oil can be medicinal but is not a “one size fits all”. Up to each person to find the dosage that each person needs, based primarily on intuition and nutrient needs”.
Wetzel recommends starting with 1/8-1/2 tsp per day and go up or down from there. How much you need depends what your needs are at this time in life. I will add that I talk to many people who hoard the bottle of oil because of the expense; rationing it out in an inconsistent manner. In my research and experience the body responds best when FCLO is taken on a steady, regular basis. Here are tricks to taking cod liver oil for all ages.
Below are suggested dosages for Green Pasture’s fermented cod liver oil and butter blend as stated by the owner, Dave Wetzel, in an interview I did a few years back.
Fermented Cod Liver Oil – found here.
Children (3 months – 12 yrs): 1/8-1/2 tsp or 1-4 capsules (0.625 – 2.5ml)

Pregnant/Breastfeeding: 1-2 tsp or 10-20 capsules (5-10ml)

Prefer FCLO in capsule form? 1 capsule = 1/8 tsp oil (500mg) ~ 1/2 tsp = 2.5ml

45-55 pounds: 1/2 tsp a day
55-65 pounds: 2/3 tsp a day
Teens: 1/4 – 1/2 tsp 2-3 times a day
Adults: 1/2 – 1 1/2 tsp 2-3 times a day
Butter Oil Blend is 2/3 fermented cod liver oil + 1/3 high vitamin butter oil.
Therapeutic Dosages
Consider a higher dose if you are:
- Moving through transition (i.e., puberty, pregnancy, menopause)
- Elderly
- Experiencing cavities, teeth/gum/throat, bone, joint) problems
- Deficient in fat-soluble vitamins A & D
- A premature baby
- Lactating
- Looking to conceive
- Autistic or struggle with behavioral issue (ADD, ADHD, OCD)

Note: The above dosages are 2-5x greater than the United States RDA for kids, 4x greater for adults, and 8x greater for pregnant women. Keep in mind that RDA values are based on studies conducted on a widespread population and are recognized as deficient in vitamin D says nutrition educator, Weston A. Price.
May all bellies be happy!
